Five Things to Remember about Company Re-orgs

Working in a corporate environment, you’ll inevitably experience more than a few company reorganizations during your career. These transitions happen for a multitude of reasons, most often financial.

There may be layoffs as different teams join together. There might be some department “flattening,” eliminating middle-managers. You may get a new title with additional responsibilities…without the pay increase. Thanks for that.

A reorg might make you feel like a Who down in Whoville—the rest of your company oblivious to your existence and willing to let you go or shift you around without a second thought. But there are a few things to remember about these changes:

1. Expect it.

Companies now require flexible employees, and when you join the corporate world, understand you will most likely deal with reorganizations. Knowing how common it is will help you be adaptable with change.

2. Realize lay-offs will happen.

It’s really a numbers game. You know when you grab a number at the deli and wait in line, hoping your number will be called before you run out of time because you have other things you have to get done? Like that. It’s not personal; they just can’t accommodate everyone.

3. Prepare to join a new team.

Be ready to share your qualities with a new boss or team. What do you currently do? What makes you different? Write a few short paragraphs about yourself and have it available to send in an email to your new team.

4. Don’t be a victim.

If you’re not comfortable with the changes or are fearful for your own position, look for new opportunities within or outside of the company.

5. Keep a positive attitude.

The only part of this you can control is how you react, and focusing on your current workload and helping out where you can will remind you that you are a valuable employee, whether or not the big wigs see it.

Just remember: an employee’s a person no matter how small, and you are a valuable contributor, whether or not the size or shape of the company recognizes it. So, work ‘til the end with a smile on your face, and know, whether here or there, you will find your new place.
