How Long Should Your Resume Be?

Less is more when it comes to the length of your resume. If you’re debating whether or not you need a second page, don’t force it and, if anything, try to avoid it.

To save on space, include fewer details about each job you held more than five years ago or the ones that don’t relate to the new position. That time you were a hostess at Olive Garden when you were in high school is not an appropriate reason for another page.

And if you’re debating adding another detail that pushes you over, remember that having an extra page is just another opportunity to lose a recruiter’s attention. You’re better off putting your efforts toward a stellar one-pager.

As always, there are exceptions to the rule. Needing extra space for certifications (as an IT pro would know) is a proper use for extra real-estate. Or if you’re further along in your career and have held many positions, you’ve earned it.
