How to Ask for Time off of Work to Go to an Interview

Yikes. Getting time off at your current job to go to an interview can be one of the more stressful parts of the entire process.

Telling the truth is the best option 99% of the time. When it comes to telling your manager about needing the morning or afternoon off, a half-truth is better: I have an appointment. Simple. Easy peasy. And most people don’t want to pry when it comes to something that might be related to your health, nor would you routinely divulge information about your health ailments.

Of course you could “call in sick,” the day of, but that’s more obvious and then requires the stress build-up of not having all your ducks in a row.

Find out what your unpaid/paid time off policy is so you can try to make appropriate “appointment” arrangements. Whether your time off is counted by half day, full day, or by the hour might impact when you say your availability is.
