Is It Okay to Check Facebook at Work?

Check out the work culture before you check your Facebook. If you don’t see other people occasionally looking at their newsfeed, you shouldn’t either. Of course coworkers checking doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do, but it is tolerated, theoretically. But in-theory doesn’t always work, so the only way you’ll know is if you ask explicitly.

The inherent problem with looking at sites like Facebook at work is that it can quickly become a habit—and a bad one at that. The easiest way to keep it in check is to stick to your phone when it comes to looking at personal things (social media, email).

Besides, your company has access to everything you do on your computer. Will they fire you over occasional FB use? No…probably not, unless it’s explicitly explained to you when you’re hired. If that’s the case, why are you reading this? But if it’s something you’re checking every 10 minutes, that’s a red flag for employers if they choose to check what you’ve been up to. And if a coworker looks over to see you on Facebook more than your work, it might create an undesirable impression of your work ethic.

If you can keep your checking in check, then post and like minimally throughout the day. And if you start to get the itch as your fingers start to type any website that begins with an “F,” time to rethink your strategy. Back to the phone it is.
